There's a barrier dividing you from the sharks.
You can't tell it's there standing out of the tank, but once you're in there, you know. Not to mention that water sobers you up fast.
They let me flounder around a bit before they hauled me out and dried me off.
...Course, if they really dislike you, they'll take the barrier out.
